Monaco is a circuit where setup is crucial. A demanding and narrow street circuit, with armco barriers creating an
unforgiving tunnel, Monte Carlo rewards drivers with good race craft, good planning and even temperament. However, Monaco
offers very little to a driver who is reckless and impulsive, and is a tough mental challenge for those unprepared or headstrong.
Passing is also a big problem. Only two parts of the circuit offer opportunities for passing, Mirabeau and at the entry to the Nouvelle
Chicane at the end of the tunnel. If very very careful, a driver could slip past at the first gear Loews Hairpin or at la Rascasse near
the end of the lap.
Having said this, I usually enjoy Monaco and the challenge it presents. Due to its narrowness and danger, it really rewards brave
drivers who are willing to place their machines just that little closer to the edge than others. Particularly at the bumpy third gear
sweeper at Casino Square and the entry to the swimming pool complex, where many tenths can be made by having a good car setup and
total committment.
A driver always feels thankful at the end of each lap of Monaco. Thankful that they have made another lap without clouting the wall,
and thankful that there is now one lap less to the end. 78 laps is gruelling around here more than any other circuit as there really
is no break for a rest in the lap. Even the tunnel section has its peril, with a challenging right hander mid way through which can catch
a driver who has taken their mind off the task.
Tough, unforgiving and relentless lap after lap, Monaco is a hard day at the office. However I view it as a must finish race, as this
track catches so many, a finisher is usually guaranteed points.
